BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA) WITH DEFENCE STUDIES MAJOR

From 2010, the Centre for Defence Studies will offer a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Defence Studies. Offering a BA in Defence Studies provides an attractive alternative for students wanting to study in this area within a broad first degree and enables them to keep open a wider range of career options. Those students taking a Defence Studies major will be able to complete another major in the BA should they wish to do so. This degree may be taken either internally or extramurally and can be tailored to meet a wide variety of lifestyles. The degree programme is structured as follows.

DEFENCE STUDIES MAJOR

A major consists of 135 credits in Defence Studies. It must consist of at least 15 credits at 100 level, at least 30 credits at 200 level, and at least 60 credits at 300 level. With permission of the Director of the Centre for Defence Studies up to 30 credits (i.e. two papers), including a maximum of 15 credits (i.e. one paper) at 300-level, may be credited to the Defence Studies major from a related discipline.

DEFENCE STUDIES MINOR

A minor consists of 75 credits in Defence Studies; at least 45 credits must be above 100 level with at least 15 credits at 300 level.

DOUBLE MAJOR

Candidates may complete a double major by passing at least 120 credits in each of two majoring subjects listed in the BA schedule, including at least 45 credits at 300-level exclusive to each major. No paper may be credited to more than one major.

WHAT WILL YOU GAIN BY UNDERTAKING DEFENCE STUDIES?

Our programmes and papers are not just for people working in the defence forces, but anyone who is interested in understanding the modern defence environment, and are offered internally and by distance learning.

Have you ever wondered why and how wars are conducted? Or why we use military force to solve political problems? Defence studies can help you answer these and other questions about the nature and complexities of warfare.

The Bachelor of Defence Studies is the only programme of its type offered in New Zealand . Subjects include Military History, Command/Leadership, Logistics, Tactics, Military Technology, International Relations, Military Law and the Law of Armed Conflict.

The Master of Defence Studies and Master of Arts (Defence and Strategic Studies) incorporate wider analysis in the areas of international relations, defence, security and policy. Subjects include the New Zealand Strategic Environment, Defence Policy, Command, Campaign Studies, Terrorism Insurgency and Transnational Crime and Advanced Military Technology.
